I have a pregnant doe…

    Smiley, Oracle of Rabbits ™

    Hi there Smiley,

I stumbled on your blog. I have  a pregnant doe. She has mated one week ago. We have her now, alone in her cage and she is frantically digging and scratching at the same corner. Why is that?

Pregnant does tend to get very nervous and agitated before birth, this is why they start to dig and some get aggressive.  As long as she has her own corner that you pad with some extra bedding, she will be fine. Even though its sometimes unnerving to watch this behaviour, it is quite normal. If you are able, let the doe out for a run every now and then – protecting any flowers/plants you have as she will likely dig a corner in the garden. She will probably keep digging like this until the last few days before birth You will know when she is about to have her litter when you see a large mass of fur padding in one corner of the hutch. The doe is best left alone at this point as she will likely have her litter early morning or very late evening when no one is around.

Is it normal for a pregnant doe to be “off her feed”?
she is displaying all the nesting traits, but has no interest in dry foods….
She is still eating carrots , grass, fresh veggies, etc.
    thank you, Crystal

I recently (3.5 weeks ago) bought a little baby bunny. This is my first rabbit, by the way. The seller told me that she was 4 weeks old when I bought her, however, I am beginning to wonder if she is pregnant. I know from research that rabbits are not sexually mature so young, but she is demanding food like crazy, pooping a lot, drinking a lot, and her urine is an orange color. Her abdomen is also a bit swollen and firm while the rest of her is thin. She’s very active and curious, and has no signs of feeling ill. She sometimes digs a bit, but usually to rearrange her toys and such in her cage. I let her out of the cage every day for hours and she seems happy (lots of binkies :) ) but I am worried about her. I don’t know if she’s pregnant or if she is ill. If she is pregnant, how? She’s only 7 or 8 weeks old! I’m confused…please help! Thanks.

    Hi

Please do not panic! It is not fatal for a 5 month old female to be pregnant, as her body is physically ready for reproduction. Keep a close eye on her and be sure to provide enough food, water and bedding remembering not to touch her nest. Please also ensure that you plan early what to do with the babies if you do not intend keeping them.

    Good luck

I think my rabbit is pregnant, was told it was a buck butttttttttt is a doe, she is scratching at all cardboard and I also have another buck. What if I dont give her a nesting box in time for her???????

    Hi

Be sure to separate the buck from the doe so you can more closely observe changes in the does behaviour and habits without the buck interfering with her space. You will be surprised how easily the doe will adapt and use what bedding she has around her to make her own nesting space, so do not panic if you think you havent provided a proper box. Make sure you give the doe plenty of food, water and straw so she can handle the process herself. If you want to be certain of the pregnancy then a visit to the vet should be arranged so they can palpate for kits.

    Good luck

help i think my bunny is pregnant but i dont know what to do if i open the hutch door im afraid a baby will fall out as she made her nest(complete with fur) next to it and i cant see if shes even had a baby bunny yet help !!!!!!

    Hi there

Don’t panic! You shouldn’t need to get into the cage except to replace food and soiled bedding – if there is another door to the hutch, try and do this from there. If not, it is unlikely that the babies will fall out as they will be buried in the fur. However, the mother rabbit wont be happy about you touching the babies to open the door, so they are best left alone until the leave the nest themselves. If you do have to open the door, wait until the mother rabbit is away from the nest, open the door quickly and carefully, don’t touch the nest and just replace whatever food/bedding you need to, then close the door carefully.

    Good luck!

Last week we took our doe to get mated. Her urine colour has changed to an orange kind of colour and she is ‘digging’ in the corner of her hutch. Were not sure if these are usual signs of pregnancy or if something is wrong with her.

    H ithere

An orange coloured urine is sometimes normal in pregnant does and so is the digging in one corner of the hutch. Make sure that she has plenty of water and food and bedding and be responsible when it comes to breeding – be sure that the kits will be properly cared for and rehomed if necessary.

    Good luck

Hi, my bunny is pulling out her hair, but not puttting it anywhere in particular, and her urine has changed to an orange colour, could she be pregnant? I’m quite freaked out as we only got her a few weeks ago from the rescue centre and they said she had been there for a month, so it’s probably unlikely she’s pregnant, but she has all the signs! What is this, is it a false pregnancy, or something else? Please help!!

I have a question, I was wondering what the “normal” habbits of a pregnant doe is during the last week of pregnancy are? My female has done everything that I have read so far but now is becoming aggressive and very teritorial in her hutch. So much so that we have had to move the buck and his hutch out of the room from her….. is this normal!?

My naughty little Buck got out 2 & 1/2 weeks ago while I was cleaning him out… the neighbour called a few days later to tell me he was at theirs & had also found another Rabbit… Both Rabbits caught & taken home I discovered the other is a Doe (who seems to be a pet got stray). I started to prepare for the enevitable arrival of Kits, but was very surprised to see her with 4 dead Kits on the cage floor today. Is it possible for her to currently have a secondary pregnacy to my Buck? If so what should I expect & should i calculate it on the normal 29 days Gestation?
