Is My Bunny Pregnant?

Hi Smiley, my son has 2 bunnies, they were supposed to be both females we
bought them from a breeder at 7 weeks old. They are approx 1 year old
    and are N. Dwarf.

One has always been a biter so I have not tried to pick it up in ages
and have not noticed the gender identity. We looked when they were 7
weeks old and they appeared to both be girls. The other one is kinder
and calmer and we pick her up. The calmer one has suddenly started
nesting, has pulled out all her belly fur and put it in a box that they
have always had in their hutch.

It looks like from your website that this is a sign of pregnancy. If
she does have babies , should I remove the other bunny? Will he hurt
    the babies?

Yesterday I took everything out of their hutch and sanitized it as we
live in a rain forest and things were moldy. That’s when I noticed the
nesting fur. I put new bedding in and put a handful of the fur back in
thinking it was warm and soft. If she turns out to be pregnant will
this activity have done any harm??

    Thank you!

    Hi there :)

Well done for noticing signs that your rabbit could be pregnant. If you see that the stomach is also getting a little bigger and she is continuing to make a nest then you should remove the boy rabbit. Try giving the female more straw as well and she may bite these smaller and carry it in bundles into her nest box. The boy should be removed until the babies are born and old enough to eat for themselves. Then you must re-introduce the rabbits to see if they get along and of course separate girls from boys! The vet will be able to help you with correct sexing of the babies. Do not worry about touching the fur. Give her straw and she will organize and nest accordingly, just be sure not to disturb the bedding again and it should be fine.

Now they are seperate and shes acting really weird. first she ate alot, now she just pushes her food bowl over and wont eat it, she keeps snuffling round her hutch pushing all the sawdust into corners. he has a bit box in the corner wish she doesnt seem to be nesting in yet. When i went to clean her out yday she starting attacking the scoop i was using. She is acting really weird. Do u think she cud be pregnant or just having a phantom pregnancy?

    Hi,
I have 3 female rabbits and 1 male.
2 of my females were always housed in a pen together and sharing 1 box to sleep in.
My other female is housed in her own pen with her own box.
My male is also house in his own pen with his own box.
31 days ago i mated the male with all the females.
Within a few days of mating, the “alone” female was pulling fur.
The 2 that were house together were showing no signs.
I had a busy week this week and didn’t get the chance to separate the 2 females at 28days and give them boxes. But i did this yesterday at day30. I have went out this morning and both of these females have pulled LOADS of fur, so i am thinking that they may be ready to give birth at anytime and must now feel comfortable, now that they are apart.
The alone female isn’t pulling fur anymore and has made no attempt to make a nest… Though i did have a feel yesterday and thought i could feel something “like” babies… This alone female has also been spraying over my shed (usually towards my male) but sometimes everywhere…
I know that gestation is 28-32 days… But usually 31… So guess it’s just a waiting game.
This is the 1st time i have tried to breed rabbits. Though i did breed guinea pigs for a few years, before i had my own children.
Oh and i have been keeping my kids away from the rabbits, as i didn’t want to stress them.
All the females are about 11mths old. The male as about 9mths.
I did see him mate about 3-4 times with each female in one attempt… Then again about 10hrs later about 2-3 times.
Thanks for any advice in advance.

I just went to check them again… No babies in any of the nest boxes, but all the females did come to greet me.
Then one of the females who has made a nest, went and did a pee in the corner and it looked like it was pure blood… Is this normal? Or might something be wrong.

    Hi BaleighAnne,

It is not definite that your rabbit is pregnant, they may be showing different behaviours when in heat, if they are not spayed. A trip to the vet can assess this properly. In the meantime keep an eye on your rabbit and provide her with plenty of food and water and nesting material for about a month. If your rabbit is not pregnant, she should be spayed to avoid unnecessary natural behaviours that appear to be false pregnancy.

    Good luck

    Hi,
Ok having had the first litter of babies this afternoon, am pretty certain that we will have another litter in the night from the other female that was housed with the one that gave birth today…. She is acting in the same was as the other female was this morning.
But my concern is for my other female, the one that was always housed alone… The one that was pulling fur, just a few weeks after mating… The one that was spraying all over my shed….
She was the one that i took the most care over when mating, cause she was the one that i really wanted to breed… I made sure to mate her 4 times, then 4 times 8-10hrs later…
She doesn’t seem to be showing signs of getting ready anymore.
Do you think it’s possible that she just isn’t pregnant…
He seemed to mate with her very well and fell off her back after everytime with a grunt.
I suppose the next few days will tell…
Am just worried that she will have the babies (if she has any) in the middle of the pen. Cause she just isn’t making a nest… and the contents of her box, that she usually sleeps in has been tipped out all over the pen.

Well i just went out and put the other one (who isn’t showing signs) in with the male, cause i read that if she is pregnant she will reject him.
Well he got a few sniffs, but she kept lunging at him and wouldn’t let him mount… Whereas before she seemed happy for him to mate.
So again, not totally sure if she is pregnant or not. LOL

Ok, i went out today and the one that wasn’t showing signs, was building a nest in the corner of her pen… not in her box… guessed she didnt like the box…
I searched everywhere for even a cardboard box to put in, couldn’t find one… then 10 mins later my mum came over with a big one… I took it out, cut a hole in it and looked at the pen and there she was…. in her nest, licking a baby……… TOO LATE.
She had 4 babies, 1 was dead… but it was 1/2 the size of the other 3… But we do have 3 fat chunky mini lops…

Well the last female deffo isn’t pregnant…. am mythed… as she was showing all the signs… got a little fat and made a nest, pulled loads of hair… But it’s now day 33 and i just put her in with my male to she if she’d reject him… But no… she has let him mate about 6 times…. Whereas the last time, she wouldn’t let him mate and she maybe only did it 3 times the once again 8hrs later…
Do you think if she had given birth and eaten them, i’d know?
Cause i was sure that there was blood in her hutch when she was pee’ing… the same as the one that had had her babies on day 31????

    Hi there

Firstly, I need to mention here a note on responsibility. As a rabbit owner, it is very important that you read up as much as possible on the responsibility of neutering and spaying a rabbit, especially as 2 of your rabbits have had litters before. I hope that the babies are being taken care of, or responsible owners are being found for them. It is important that rabbits are not bred from unless you are a knowledgeable breeder or you know someone who is and will assist. Also, it is not necessary to put the female in with the male to ‘test’ if she is pregnant, by seeing if she rejects him. This is easily done by taking both rabbits out and holding one while introducing them slowly to the other, all in a controlled way, without allowing the two rabbits to get together and mate.

If your rabbit was pregnant, it is possible that the babies were eaten. This may have been because of the regular checks of the nest (which some females see as interfering and will act instinctively). However, it is important to note that the female may have just been going through a phantom pregnancy and is showing signs but not physically pregnant.

I would strongly suggest that you visit your vet and obtain some advice on spaying and neutering your rabbits. Also, because the male and female have actually mated now, you need to keep in contact with the vet and have them check for babies in about 2 weeks.

    Hi,

I am not actually looking to neuter or spay my rabbits and there are homes in mind for all of the babies that will be produced. The babies were all planed and not an act of irresponsable ownership.
I have read up as much as i could on breeding rabbits. I did breed guinea pigs for a few years before my children were born and have owned rabbits for a few years, thought not bread before until now.
My rabbits are all very very well cared for and are in no way mis-treated.
They live in a lovely large warm shed with electricity and light coming in from the large windows on every wall, they are housed in huge pens and they also have outside runs.
I do not let my male run with my females. They are cleaned up and handled daily…
When i say i was checking the nest for babies, i wasn’t in routing about… i would have a quick look in through the roof without opening fully and while i was doing this, the female wasn’t distressed in any way… She was calm and eating her food. I am aware of the basic rules when it comes to breeding and i know not to do anything silly that would distress the mother cause her to harm the babies.
But i was just a little confused by the way that this one female was acting.
I do think that she probably had a phantom pregnancy, i can’t see any signs that there were any babies in the nest and in the short space of time between checking, i don’t think she’d have been able to eat a litter and not leave any trace.
I think she may be a little over weight though…. as she does still seem to be on the chunky side. Whereas my other 2 seem to look normal now that the babies are here.
I did however only put her with the male because i had read that this was one way to know… I could feel the babies on the other 2 when i palpated them, but couldn’t feel any on her.
Am sorry if i have set alarm bells ringing, but i really do love my bunnies and so do my kids.
Am sure i was just over-reacting this morning when i thought she might have had the babies and eaten them. I was just looking for a senario… As she had been bread well the last time round and my buck is proven and i just wondered why she hadn’t taken.

I don’t actually know of any rabbit breeders in my area or i would ask them for advice.

Kids, ol’ Smiley has had a case of hiccups for about a month. I’m trying to get rid of them by scaring myself (I actually watched the movie Beaches, but I just got hives). As I try to recuperate, my one hope is that you kids will help each other. Do you know the expression “heal thyself”? Yeah, like that.

This is now a forum for rabbit health, so please, reach out to each other and give each other answers! Also, look around! There’s a lot of good advice about being a pregnant rabbit.

I’m hoping to recover soon. In the meantime, I just rented Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

I dont know how to palpate and she wont let me. The vet is too high, called today. and her fur is lose and coming out in chunks. Is she pregnant?
